Guide to Format a partition in Windows

Warning! - Formatting any partition on a hard disk will completely remove all data present on that partition. Getting back data after formatting a partition is almost impossible (possible in very rare cases). Also never try to format the partition containing "Windows" installation folders. Do it only if you know what you are doing.

First of all, a partition ( or drive ) is a division (part) of a hard disk used to store data. Every partition will have a specific name ( like c:, d: etc.). You can decide to format only a specific partition leaving the remaining partitions un harmed.

Now to format a partition from windows, follow these steps.

  • Identify which partition ( drive ) needs to be formatted.
  • Back up all your important data from that drive.
  • Open "My Computer" from desktop, you should see list of all your drives there.
  • Right Click on the drive name which should be formatted.
  • In the popup menu, select "Format..." item.
  • This opens a small popup window with Formatting options.
  • Verify the correct drive name is displayed on the popup window.
  • Select "Quick" to quick format your drive.
  • Specify a label for the drive in the Label text box.
  • Check everything again and click "Start" button.
  • The drive you have selected will be formatted now.
