Guide to Format a partition in Windows

If you used a computer at least once, you have heard this term "Boot disk" or "Booting floppy disk". But how to create one for yourself? I've described the steps involved in creating a Booting disk. Follow all the steps carefully.

Applicable to : Windows 95/98/98SE/ME. (May work with other versions as well.)

Get a good working empty floppy disk. Get a new one if you can. If you are using an old good floppy, make sure that you have a backup of that floppy contents. Because while creating a boot floppy, everything on the disk will be destroyed.

  • Insert the floppy into the floppy disk drive. Make sure that the write protect notch on the floppy is closed (ie the floppy is writable).
  • Go to Start => Settings => Control Panel.
  • Double click the "Add/Remove Programs" icon there. The "Add/Remove Programs" window should open.
  • Go to Startup disk Section there.
  • Click "Create Disk" button there. Windows will ask for confirmation and create a boot disk.
  • If boot disk creation is failed in the middle, probably it is due to bad floppy disk. Use another disk and follow the same procedure.
  • Alternatively you can download a Windows boot disk image from www.bootdisk.com site..
