Display related problems and solutions

Occasionally when we clean our old pc or assemble a new pc, we face this problem. Computer Starts but Nothing will be displayed on the monitor. It remains just blank. What happened?

I have tried to collect few possible causes which create "No Display activity" problems.

  • First Check whether your CPU and Monitor are getting Power or Not. ( If both CPU and Monitor are having their power LED on, then both are getting power). If one of them is not getting power, try replacing their power cable. If the problem continues with CPU, there may be an SMPS problem. Let it be checked by a technician. If Monitor is not getting power, there may be various reasons for this and should be attended by a qualified technician.
  • If both CPU and Monitor are getting power, The CPU to Monitor data cable may be loosely connected. Try fixing it firmly and restart your computer.
  • The Next culprit may be the Monitor itself. Try connecting and testing the monitor with a different working CPU. If problem repeats there, the monitor needs servicing.
  • Else the problem may be with your CPU's VGA card. If you are having older CPU, there is a chance that the VGA card may not be fixed properly in its PCI slot.. Try fixing it properly and test the setup. Also try a different PCI slot for the card.
  • Next, Use a different working VGA card now, and test the setup. If it works, then your VGA card is gone and needs replacement.
  • If your computer has built in VGA/AGP adapter, try using a PCI VGA card in PCI slots and test the setup. if it works, then your built in VGA/AGP adapter is not working.
  • If everything fails, as a last attempt try fixing all loose connections in cables like Hdd cable, Fdd cable, CD Rom cable etc. Also check whether your Heat sink fan is working or not.
  • If the problem continues, Call your PC hardware engineer.
